FAQs
Welcome to the future of backyard water features. At Pitless Waterfalls, we’ve engineered the “muck” and the headache out of the traditional waterfall. Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast or a professional contractor, these FAQs will help you understand why “Pitless” is the smartest choice for your landscape.
What is a "Pitless" waterfall, and how does it differ from a "Pondless" system?
Traditional pondless systems rely on a deep pit filled with crates
and gravel. While they look nice initially, the rocks act as a trap for leaves and debris, which eventually rot and clog the system.
A *Pitless Waterfall* replaces that rock-filled pit with a heavy-duty, solid-tank reservoir. The debris is filtered *before* it ever enters the water supply, keeping your water flowing and your maintenance down to seconds, not hours.

How does the "vanishing" effect work if there’s no rock pit?
The water flows into the “face” of the Pitless reservoir and disappears into the tank body. Once installed, only the “head” of the tank is visible at ground level. This can be easily camouflaged with a piece of natural slate or one of our custom-fitted artificial rocks for a completely seamless, natural look.
How do I clean the system?
It’s “stupid simple.” Our design features two integrated debris baskets. When they get full, you simply lift them straight up, dump the debris, and slide them back in. No more digging through slimy rocks to find a clog.
Will this system prevent my pump from burning out?
Yes. In traditional systems, debris eventually clogs the rocks, “starving” the pump of water or causing the feature to overflow. Because the Pitless system filters out debris immediately, your pump remains submerged in, unobstructed water, significantly extending its lifespan.
How do I winterize my Pitless Waterfall?
In cold climates, we recommend turning the feature off once the surface begins to freeze. Instead of draining the tank, fully fill the reservoir. This ensures the pump and plumbing remain safe far beneath the frozen surface. In extreme climates, a standard pond de-icer can be used for extra protection.
Is the Pitless system DIY-friendly?
Absolutely. Traditional kits come with dozens of confusing parts. The Pitless system is streamlined into three primary components:
1. *The Solid Reservoir Tank*
2. *The Waterfall Starter*
3. *The Liner*
This simplicity eliminates the “buyer’s paralysis” and the need for constant re-explaining during the build.

How much time does the Pitless system save contractors?
Professional installers typically see a *25% reduction in installation time*. By eliminating the labor-intensive process of digging a massive pit and hauling tons of “basin rock,” you can get off the job site faster while providing a superior, longer-lasting product to your client.
Can I customize the height and length of my waterfall?
Yes. While our standard kits accommodate a wide range of “rise and run,” we offer various kit sizes to fit any backyard footprint.
Why should I invest in a Pitless kit over a cheaper big-box store kit?
You get what you pay for. Cheaper reservoirs are often made of thin plastic that can bow or deform under the weight of settling dirt. Pitless tanks are built from thick, sturdy material designed to maintain their shape for years. When you factor in the saved labor, the built-in filtration, and the extended life of your pump, the Pitless system is the most cost-effective choice on the market.
